Description

12” x 36” First of all, I am a woman working in New Mexico, and….All of these entries go together as one final piece, "The Invasion." Each of the following photos will be a "detail" of the overall piece. I entered five times because the pieces are separate, but work together to form a whole. It is possible that each section could be sold individually. They hang next to each other on the wall and can be placed in a variety of ways (including around a corner or around another person’s artwork). They are also interesting when placed up high on the wall in the way you actually look at swallow nests. My sculptures are an exploration of emotion and connection through the juxtaposition of materials and forms. Primarily working with bronze, I combine elements that might seem dissimilar—like local, southwestern animals and human objects—to reveal the complex relationships between humanity and the natural world. This blending of unexpected components echoes the surrealist tradition, challenging perceptions and inviting the viewer to delve into the subconscious. In this series I was focusing on the complex layering of New Mexico history, the idea of gentrification and my place in the gentrification cycle. I have done this through the depiction of cliff swallow nests and human invaders..
