Description
13.25"x22"As women, especially women of color and minorities (I am a member of the LGBTQ+ community) we are currently under a deluge of attacks. We don’t want much, mostly the ability to make our own healthcare decisions, equality and a safe space in this storm of patriarchal attacks on our constitutional rights, along with the freedom to choose who we love. The Bosque is a safe harbor for migrating birds to stop, rest and recharge. We are at that inflection point in time again…where is our safe harbor? The LGBTQ+ community has been under attack since I was a young, closeted lesbian in the 60’s and 70’s. We had no safe harbor and had to create our own within our community, banding together when the AIDS crisis hit. My wife and I moved from Texas in 2020 to New Mexico, not only for the physical beauty of the land, but as a safe harbor after the onslaught of attacks from the right-wing ideology of the country and the state of Texas. The upper portion of this piece (modified in Photoshop and NIK software) that of migrating birds from the Bosque Del Apache, paired with the lower portion depicting the tall grasses and the beautiful oranges of the clays in the New Mexico area…the peace and beauty of the land I have come to so love. Anger only fuels more anxiety, the calmness of the work is meant to be seen as a serene and peaceful port in the storm…safe harbor for all.
