MAAIKE {Mae}ve AZIZA

“Painting has been my sanity for many years. In 2022, I injured my brain in a car accident. I thought I had forgotten how to paint and once I was “awake” again, THAT has spurred me to a new level of obsession.”

A self-taught artist, Maaike uses vibrant color, shapes, texture, marks, movement, & energy imbued in the canvas to convey and elicit emotion. Music, time, place, sensation, & language globally are deep influences. The Olympic Peninsula, New York, New Orleans, Morocco, & New Mexico, resound throughout. Maaike’s layered work is rooted in graffiti, abstraction, emotional transference, impressionism, social justice, and community and includes masking, revealing, scratching out, exposing various stratum of the process but generally resolving in a cohesive expression that says what came before can never be erased but it can be absorbed, overwritten and transformed into something meaningful.

In addition to showing her work at Ghostwolf, Maaike owns an artisanal soap & candle company that employs women coming out of domestic violence. You can find many of the products she creates at the gallery!
