NOTEWORTHY

DENISE WEAVER ROSS FEATURED IN ALBUQUERQUE THE MAGAZINE!

Be sure and pick up this month’s Albuquerque The Magazine, as Ghostwolf artist Denise Weaver Ross is this month’s ABQ Creative! Well deserved, and the spread is gorgeous! Congratulations Denise!

VOTING FOR ALBUQUERQUE THE MAGAZINE’S BEST OF CITY IS OPEN!

We know… we know… again! We won last year, but we got left out of the official print publication, so this is extra personal for us! (The staff at ABQ THE MAG was super nice about it and did post a correction in the April magainze, but it wasn’t the same!) So… here we go again! Only five galleries are chosen annually, and we were incredibly honored to make the list last year, please help us do it again so we can see our name in print! Thank you so very, very much friends! You will find the “Best Gallery” Category under “Local Fun”.

DENISE WEAVER ROSS & ROE LiBRETTO
Orpheum Community Hub Mural Progress

Artists Denise Weaver Ross and Roe LiBretto have been hard at work, learning new skills and laying the ground work for the new mural on the Orpheum Building! Check out their progress below!

In case you missed it last month, Artist Denise Weaver Ross has been commissioned to create a mural on the face of the Orpheum Building in downtown Albuquerque. The winning design, shown below, represents a film reel unfurling across the north face of the building. This image portrays scenes important to the life of the community, and alludes to the area’s economic transition from the steam locomotive to the film industry. The mural contains images from the culture and history of the Barelas neighborhood, beginning on the Western end with a steam locomotive and then moving through images of important people: Senator Dennis Chávez, Dr. Aragon (the President of New Mexico Highlands University), Rudolfo Anaya (the author of Bless Me Ultimá), and Maclovia Sanchez de Zamora (an herbalist and healer, who worked at the B. Ruppe Drugstore for over 30 years); it then transitions to scenes from traditional community pageants such as the Dance of the Matachines and La Posada, and ends with a visual reference to the windows at the Railyards. The background of the mural will be a stylized and impressionistic portrayal of the Rio Grande and the Sandia Mountains, as well as a low-rider parked on the banks of the river, representing the car culture associated with life along Route 66. Artist Roe LiBretto is assisting Denise in implementing the final vision. Look for them up on scaffolds outside of the building as you drive by!
